Ghosts and
Angels:

Thanks Galore!

Thanks to everyone who made this album necessary, possible, and fun:

• To Ralph Covert, for making me an active songwriter again and turning my ideas into replayable reality. To Mark Schwarz of Uberstudio, for knowing just where to place mikes and what buttons and faders to push to make me sound like the best "me" possible. To all the musicians who played on this CD, but especially my stalwart rhythm section—bassist Tom "Pickles" Piekarski and drummer Frank Donaldson—who played on all songs with patience and panache.

• To Michael Smith, for giving me the homework assignment that became this album's title song (and for being an inspiration for eons). To Steve Earle, who taught me (over six all-too-brief weeks) that not only was it okay for me to be influenced by the great songwriters of folk and rock history, but that it is essential to finding and perfecting one's own musical signature.

• To Anne Hills, who pushed me out on to my first Chicago stage. To His'n'Hers' Marge Summit, the first club owner in Chicago to hire me. To the Barbarossa's Nancy Roettinger, for providing the most marvelous venue in which to both strut one's stuff without pressure and experience some of the greatest acoustic music and performers ever to grace a stage. To Two Way Street's Dave Humphreys, for keeping the folk flame alive for three decades and for letting me help fuel it . To Gina Pavone of Winners, who gave me my first paid gig since I resumed my solo career.

• To Steve Rich, who encouraged me to show my silly side; but also to Dave Porter, who urged me to let all my musical dimensions emerge. To Terry Straker, guitar surgeon extraordinaire. To Lake Effect, which gave me the chance to polish and strengthen my lead vocal chops. To Bob Berlien and Kathy Routliffe—bandmates, singing partners, inspirations, and the best friends anybody could ever have.

• To my son, Gordy, for being the World's Greatest Kid (not to mention terrific musical and career advisor, and talented rocker in his own right). To Mom & Dad, for having me. To my dear Bob—friend for 33 years, soulmate for 31, and husband for 30—for indulging, encouraging, loving and bankrolling me; and for always saying what needed to be said.

• To Joan Bledig, JDA Typesetting Corporation, Chicago, IL for the design of the CD's booklet, tray card, and face, with graphics assistance from Bob Berlien. To Michael Allen Howard for the photography.

• And last but not least—to Ed Sunden, who brought almost all my Chicago friends into my life, helped me hone my musical (and legal) skills, infuriated and delighted me, and never met an opinion he didn't express. We lost you way too soon (but then again, any time would have been too soon). Wherever you are, Don't Panic (as if). This album is dedicated to you—and despite what you always claimed, I know you can hear it.
